This morbid photograph was taken in March 1997 in Banff National Park. While I do have a strange fascination with photographing dead wildlife, this elk also helps illustrate a point: each year, more than one hundred large animals are killed on Banff's roads and railways by our cars and trains. This bull was hit and killed by a train in mid-winter and the body, encased in ice, was still in perfect condition almost two months later. Banff loses a lot of elk each year to human causes, but far more startling are the losses incurred on Banff's moose and wolf populations, both struggling to survive in areas of the park like the Bow Valley, where a railway and two roads connect Banff and Lake Louise. |
