Bargains in Banff – A Lot at Steak
Banff National Park, Alberta
There is no shortage of great restaurants in Banff from the very basic Subway to the much more posh La Beaujolais. However, if your bank account is beginning to look less like a phone number and more like a James Bond code number, it may be time to look at alternatives without lowering your standards. Banff is beautiful in this respect. It is such a small place and the competition so fierce that different bars and restaurants often have unbelievable deals on different days of the week. Steak night on Thursday in the Elk and Oarsman is the perfect example of what you can get with a little research!
It is a good idea to book your table before you head in as deals like this don’t remain secret for long. The Elk and Oarsman itself is a lovely pub where the vibrant atmosphere grabs you as soon as you walk up the stairs and in the door. The waitress unnecessarily brought some menus which I know are full of delicious options but it was 6 steak sandwiches on our table – we knew what we wanted. Medium rare, rare, well done, with mushrooms, extra salad, fries or onion rings – there are plenty of options but when there is a huge steak plate for only $8, the main course is an easy choice.
It felt like we were in a live advertisement when the plates came out as the oohs and aahs surrounded the poor waiter who tried to figure out who had the medium rare, no mushrooms and extra salad. It says a lot about the size of the meal that a bunch of young(ish) people who had just spent a day out hiking in the cold air around the Canadian Rockies with a hangover could hardly finish their meal. I did say hardly! The steak on ciabatta bread was the equivalent to what one might expect from a fancy restaurant but in a much more chilled out environment as the screens showed the Vancouver Canucks Ice Hockey team suffering yet another loss.
Of course, the bill should have come to about ten bucks each with taxes and tip except for the fact that steak goes down so much better with beer. It just so happens that the Elk and Oarsman has specials with beer as well. It doesn’t matter how special a price is; if you keep buying them, they add up. Unfortunately the restaurant management can’t take responsibility for my gluttonous ways. There are few better deals in the Canadian Rockies let alone Banff but don’t worry reader, I will do my best to search them out for you! Make no Mis-steak about it…
