Breakfast in Banff- Bruno’s

Posted by Rick Wilson, Monday, November 30th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Banff, Alberta

Bruno’s could probably be considered my local in this little Rockies town called Banff. It is here I choose to come and watch the weekly live music, it is here that I won my first and only quiz on a hung-over Sunday night and so the idea of going here for breakfast seemed natural. Both Bruno’s and Melissa’s have the reputation amongst Banff locals as the place to go for your weekend breakfast. The two places are quite different in many ways but as I soon discovered; both are worthy of their reputations.

Almost anything is available on the menu in Bruno's of Banff.

Almost anything is available on the menu in Bruno's of Banff.

It was past 11am by the time we made it to the front door. Regardless of what time of the day or year it is, Bruno’s always seems to be packed out. It just has that welcoming atmosphere which is so hard to walk away from. Whereas Melissa’s is much bigger and more formal in many ways, Bruno’s is small, vibrant and generally a place where the younger crowd go. As seats were already filled up, we took our places and had a look through the extensive breakfast menu.

If you are looking for a healthy breakfast menu, this may not be your best option. It has taste in abundance but it is certainly not going to gain Kate Moss’ respect. I had the traditional breakfast which was everything it promised to be. The home fries are particularly impressive. It is a tasty home made potato that fills any white parts of your plate. The bottomless coffee helped work the food down. The big difference between the crowds in Melissa’s and Bruno’s was perhaps seen most clearly by the number of people ordering “breakfast cocktails” to fight off the hangovers from the night before and get them ready for another day on the ski slopes. Ah how I do love the mind set of visitors to Banff!
