Kananaskis Country
Jumpingpound Ridge
22 kilometres (14 miles)
Intermediate - Advanced

One of the most popular trails that local riders (with enough energy!) will do at least once every year. When you've moved up all of those switchbacks and you're on the ridge looking ahead at some of the best singletrack in this area, it will all seem worth the effort.

The summit is at 2180 metres where the alpine flowers grow and the views of the Fisher Range and Compression Ridge are unobstructed. Take this opportunity to get on top of one of the ridges to send home an impressive photo, making others wish they had come along.

Banff National Park
Spray Loop
10.5 kilometres (6.5 miles)
Beginner

This fireroad is probably one of the most used trails in the Banff townsite. It starts just behind the Banff Springs Hotel parking lot where there is a Parks Canada parking lot for those who wish to drive to the trailhead.

The trail follows the Spray River up and down a wide, well-groomed trail. Ride the trail as you would drive your car, and keep tight to the side to avoid the hikers and equestrians.

At the midway point (5.5km) you'll find some picnic tables to enjoy a snack or lunch, then continue over the bridge to the other side of the Spray River. The trail will lead to the Banff Springs Golf course where you follow the paved road to Bow Falls, then back up to Spray Road. Cycle beyond the Banff Springs hotel and back to the parking lot.

Jasper National Park
Palisades Lookout

Intermediate

Mountain bikers in Jasper have the good fortune of being able to choose from a wide variety of trails. This particular trail has great views and gives a good workout enroute to the top.

Starting from the gates at Pyramid Lake continue following the lake until you reach a junction at 7.5 kms. Turn right onto the more rugged, steeper road which continues on to the old lookout point at 2100 metres. Beautiful views of the Athabasca valley, Mount Edith Cavell and the Main Ranges of the Canadian Rockies await you.

Your descent is fast one, so buckle up and try to control your speed to avoid any further complications in your life. When you get to the bottom, reward yourself with a refreshing foot soak in Pyramid Lake.
