The Nightlife of Banff – A Shot in the Dark

Banff, Alberta.

Sometimes I think that the word Banff was created simply for those who have enjoyed a beer or two après ski. It is impossible to slur the word “BANFF”! Whether it be summer or winter activities that you have been getting up to during your stay in the Canadian Rockies, people love to equalize the health they have achieved during the day with a couple of drinks when the sun goes down. There are a heap of options to choose from whether it be a bit of culture in the theatre or some live music in one of the packed pubs, there is no better man to point you in the right direction than Mountain Man.

Best Pub

Wild Bills has, like me, been around a long time and has always been a popular hangout for the younger crowd. It is where I always go to watch any big sports games on the big screens. Its menu is simple, traditional and delicious – the huge hamburgers, in particular, are so addictive; they must be made with some drug! There is also a great choice of locally brewed beers as well as the old favorites. The dance-floor is always full during busy times – perfect place for a Mountain Man to get rejected! Dangerously, there is also a karaoke night on Tuesdays so get some practice done in the shower.

Best Arts & Culture

It’s the easy option to recommend but The Banff Centre is internationally recognized as a hub for the best of Canada’s creativity. The setting itself, surrounded by mountains suggests something powerful within the building and rarely are you let down. Whether it is live music, excellent theatre or local talent, the Banff Centre is the home. Check the website for listings.

Best Nightclub

banfftheaurora2The Aurora (only open from Tuesday through Sunday) gets packed in peak season becoming full of young Banff workers and vacationers who are looking to burn off more energy dancing after an already hectic day of activities. International DJ’s often play at the Aurora. There is a lounge area out the back with a fire which is the perfect place to head for a relaxed drink in the winter months. The Hoodoo is another one of my favorites. It is a little smaller with a more relaxed atmosphere but the dance-floor fills up just as much as the Aurora.
