My first experience of hiking in Banff National Park came over twenty years ago. It was when I started work as a park interpreter here in 1986, however, that I began in earnest to explore the region. The summer of 1990, during which I took a leave of absence from my park position, was a glorious opportunity to go on several long backpacking excursions into the more remote areas of the park…

My wish is that these insights and this information will be apparent in this book, and that Backcountry Banff will prove useful and helpful in developing and cultivating a sense of this wonderful multi-faceted place.

Banff National Park encompasses much of enduring interest and provides ample scope to engage in adventure. I hope you enjoy the richness of its heritage. Mike Potter
