Canadians flock to road bike Tucson, Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona – When I head down south to the states I cannot get enough of road biking in the desert the Arizona desert.

Unlike here in Alberta, Arizona is very bike frielndly, blessed with what seems like unlimited roads with wide shoulders and/or low trafficked roads.  Do stay away from the geriatric drivers as they can be unpredictable.

Cycling Arizona and the wild west

I just got back from a press trip sponsored by Bike Tucson AZ. We biked over 120 kilometers from Amado, Arizona to Sasabe on the Mexican border. I savored the windy road to an old west style coffee shop, rubbing elbows with ranchers carrying guns in the their holsters  – just like the days of the wild west.

Winter wolf photography in Jasper

For those of you that are interested in finding wolves to photograph this winter, there are few better places in Canada to begin your search than in Jasper National Park.  Jasper is renowned for its wolves and 7 different wolf packs in and around Jasper use and cross roads during the winter season.

One of my favourite spots to look for wolves is along the river on Highway 16 in either direction from Jasper.  For more specific locations and tips on where to find wolves to photograph in and around Jasper, feel free to check out my guide to Where to Photograph Wildlife on the Icefields Parkway in Banff and Jasper National Parks.

Photographing Larches at Lake O’Hara in Yoho

One of the premier places to photograph landscapes in the Canadian Rockies is in the spectacular alpine environs of Lake O’Hara in Yoho National Park, half an hour’s drive from world renowned Lake Louise in Banff National Park.  Access to this natural wonderland of emerald lakes, snow-capped peaks and stunning vistas is via bus with Parks Canada, at which point you can either stay in the lodge, the Alpine Club of Canada hut, or the campground.

Lake O’Hara is a favourite fall photography spot of mine because of the beautiful forests of larch trees that turn gold each autumn, lighting up the landscape even further for nature photography buffs.  A short hour-long hike from the lake can get a photographer up on to the Opabin Plateau in time for sunrise amid the larches, a truly magical experience for a landscape photographer!

Expect to book this trip at least a few weeks in advance, so if you have missed this year’s prime time (late September to early October — see our post from last fall about autumn photography in the Canadian Rockies), then aim for 2013.

Happy shooting!

Mystérieuse montagne Castle <>, Parc National Banff

Montagne Castle Chateau, Parc National Banff

Castle Mountain, Banff National Park

Look Up and Feel Small in the Face of Castle Mountain in Banff National Park

Castle Mountain is one of the most outstanding mountains on the Trans-Canada highway in Banff National Park. The massive shape of the mountain with its delicate detail of limestone and dolomite rock makes this mountain exclusive. The vertical and extremely wide face of Castle Mountain seems that much more dramatic during sunset, sunrise or with a backdrop of a bright blue sky.

This picture was taken from the bus while on my way back to Lake Louise, where there are many hiking, rafting and sightseeing opportunities available. My passion for photography helps me appreciate even more this place I call home.

Let us protect the planet together with the same intention: a healthy quality of life.
