Incredible Views of Mount Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies

Incredible Mount Assiniboine: The Great Divide on the British Columbia-Alberta border.

Hiking to the base of Mount Assiniboine was a dream for me. The trail up allowed many beautiful views. There is an authentic cabin located at the base of the mountain which was a challenge to reach. The elevation gain is not much of a factor but it is a long hike in. If you feel like you want to visit the place without any physical stress, you can fly in by helicopter and then hike around the peak. If you’re still stressed out, you might want to try rafting on the Kicking Horse River.

I call this particular picture Morning Light. With the glacier lake so calm and the sky so colourful, I really immersed myself in this fantastic landscape at the base of Mount Assiniboine. This paradise forms a part of an UNESCO treasure.

The Canadian Rockies inspires freedom and a simple life.

Photography for Fall Colours in Banff National Park

One of my favourite spots for fall colours in Banff National Park is along the Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Castle Mountain. There are some beautiful groves of aspen trees along the parkway that turn honey gold each autumn between September 15th and 30th, making for some spectacular landscape photography in the heart of the Rockies.

Watch for great stands of aspen to photograph near Hillsdale Meadows and by the Sawback turn-out.

Happy shooting!

Fall Moose Photography in Jasper

As we approach the end of summer here in the Canadian Rockies, I thought I would put out a quick note to wildlife photographers coming to the Rockies in the next month about photographing moose as the rut approaches.  Several of my favourite locations to photograph the moose rut from are located in Jasper National Park and neighbouring Mt Robson Provincial Park — in particular, I cruise the Yellowhead Highway from Moose Lake (about 45 kms/25 mi west of Jasper) back towards Jasper early in the mornings and late in the evenings. There are a number of enormous bulls that patrol the area immediately east of Moose Lake.

The area around Sunwapta Falls on the Icefields Parkway is also a good bet for moose, particularly if you concentrate south of the falls in the Beauty Flats area.

Be aware that bull moose are ornery at this time of year, so I recommend staying back at least 100 meters/yards and using a long telephoto for your shots.

Happy shooting!

le lac Spray, Kananaskis Country

Destination: Canmore, l’Alberta

Spray Lakes, Kananaskis Country

Destination: Canmore, Alberta

This is Spray Lake early in the morning. A mysterious cloud covered a white peak in the distance and reflected on the water, creating a magical setting. The dam at Spray Lake has been an important producer of electrical power since 1911. The reservoir is also used for recreational activities such as fishing.

Other recreational activities near Spray Lake in Kananaskis Country include rafting the Bow River (Spray River is a tribitary), rafting the Kananaskis River, and day hikes! Also, don’t forget to check out our Canmore web cams, as they show incredible views of the town and surrounding countryside.

In my opinion, Spray Lake is a great spot to relax and enjoy the view. My passion of discovering the Canadian Rockies grew on me as soon as I moved in Banff in 2002. I am sure you will admire the beauty of the landscape when you travel to this wild region of Canada.

Let us keep the planet safe and enjoy life!

Banff Golf Sunrise, Banff National Park

Morning Golfing in Banff, Alberta

This was a once in a lifetime experience in the Canadian Rockies. This is a perfect sunrise at Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course. The strong red and yellow colours form to create a fire in the sky. Every time I witness such a spectacle I am inspired by Mother Nature.

The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course is a wonderful place to play golf while being surrounded by great, yet at times distracting, landscape. While golfing on this course one has the possibility to encounter wild life such as elk, coyotes, bears, and other small mammals. The squirrels can be a concern as they are known to steal snacks from the golf carts by unsuspecting golfers! The Fairmont Banff is not the only golf course in the Canadian Rockies, so you might want to check out these other Banff golfing packages to find a location that is closest to your vacation destination. You could also pair your golfing trip with a whitewater rafting trip in Banff.

While golfing in the Canadian Rockies please avoid feeding the animals.

Wapta Falls, Field, BC

Sightseeing in Wapta Falls and Rafting the Kicking Horse River

Wapta Falls is great place to relax and get wet in this cold and beautiful glacial waterfall. This photo was taken at the top of the highest point. The distinct purity of the water is precious to the Canadian Rockies.

Once you are done relaxing, get wet on the whitewater rapids of the Kicking Horse River or the Fraser River in BC.

If you’d like to experience the fun of a rafting and get in some water-watching sightseeing, you might want to consider the Minnewanka Lake Cruise. You will learn about the wildlife in the region and the early explorers who named the surrounding mountains.

You don’t have to get wet to have fun!
